Greetings and other similar expressions

In Spanish, there is a formal 'you' ('usted') and there is an informal one ('tú'). That is why some of the following expressions have different forms, depending on the formality (or informality) of the situation.

* SAYING HELLO

Buenos días (= Good morning)

Buenas tardes (= Good afternoon)

Buenas noches (= Good evening/ good night)

Hola (= Hi)

¿Cómo está (usted)? [formal] / ¿Cómo estás (tú)? [informal] (= How are you?)

¿Qué tal? (= How's it going?)

* SAYING HOW YOU ARE

Muy bien/ Excelente (= Very well)

Bien (= Fine)

Regular/ Más o menos (= So so)

Mal (= Bad)

Muy mal/ Terrible (= Very bad)

* SAYING GOODBYE

Adiós/ Chao (= Goodbye)

Nos vemos/ Te veo [informal] (= See you around)

Hasta luego/ Nos vemos pronto/ Te veo pronto [informal] (= See you soon)

Hasta mañana/ Nos vemos mañana/ Te veo mañana [informal] (= See you tomorrow)

* OTHER EXPRESSIONS

Por favor (= Please)

Gracias (= Thank you)

Muchas gracias (= Thank you very much)

No hay de qué/ De nada (= You're welcome)

Perdón / Lo siento (= Sorry)

Mucho gusto (= Nice to meet you)

¿Y tú? [informal]/ ¿Y usted? [formal] (= And you?)

Igualmente (= Likewise [in response to 'Mucho gusto'])
